State-by-State Progress: Keeping You Informed on FSM’s Connectivity Evolution

The FSM Connectivity Project, initially backed by a US$30.8 million World Bank grant and endorsed by FSM Congress in April 2020, is revolutionizing national connectivity. Our undersea fiber optic cables now connect Pohnpei, Chuuk, and Yap to the global network, with Kosrae expected to join by 2024. Managed by FSM Telecommunications Cable Corporation (FSMTCC) and overseen by the Telecommunication Regulations Authority (TRA), the project introduces competition into FSM’s telecommunications sector, spurring innovation and improving services. Key achievements include the rollout of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) in Yap and extensive survey work in Yap and Pohnpei, marking significant strides toward a comprehensive digital transformation.

Fiber Cable Connection Timeline

2020 – 2021: Undersea fiber optic cable connected to Pohnpei, Chuuk and Yap

2023 – 2024: Kosrae to be connected

2023 – 2024: Site Surveys. Our comprehensive survey work is underway across all states, diligently mapping out potential fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) routes.

What’s Next:

  • Procurement Phase: Following the survey, we’ll embark on a strategic procurement phase, ensuring the acquisition of high quality materials and resources for a robust network.
  • Construction Phase: With the necessary materials in hand, contracted professionals will handle the construction phase, laying a strong foundation for a reliable fiber-optic infrastructure.
  • Installation Phase (rollout): As construction concludes, the much-anticipated rollout of FTTH is scheduled to commence in 2024 for the initial three states. Exciting times lie ahead as we bring ultra-high-speed internet to your doorstep, connecting communities for a digitally enriched future.
