Connecting Pohnpei with Fiber
In 2010, the FSM Telecommunications Corporation (FSMTC) along with TE SubCom, an industry pioneer in undersea communications technology, completed a fiber optic extension which connected Pohnpei with the HANTRU1 Cable System, which connects Kwajalein, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and Guam.
This extension provided Pohnpei with high bandwidth connectivity to the rest of the world via state-of-the-art undersea fiber optic links. Previously, connectivity was only available using satellite transmission, which was slower and less reliable.
The FSM government, with funding from the World Bank, has now connected Chuuk State to Pohnpei’s cable extension. The FSMT Cable Corporation acts as the Open Access Entity for FSM and on behalf of the Government of FSM operates and manages the cable.
