Connecting Yap to Fiber

The government of the Federated States of Micronesia and the World Bank joined forces to finance the design and construction of a submarine fiber optic cable connecting Yap to a trans-Pacific submarine fiber optic cable (SEA-US) that connects Indonesia to Guam.  FSMT Cable Corporation, acting as the Open Access Entity for FSM and on behalf of the Government of FSM, will operate and manage the cable. The Yap fiber cable was declared operational and has been in service since the end of June 2018.

The Yap fiber optic project began with the FSM government‘s telecommunications sector reform and the subsequent financing agreement with the World Bank. This “Connectivity Project” was to design, develop, and operate submarine cables to improve broadband adoption in FSM.  Government and the World Bank are now in discussions to bring “fiber to the home,” which will seek to connect nearly all households, businesses and government offices on Yap to the undersea fiber optic network. This will provide the main island of Yap with ultra high speed internet and improved telephone services. Updates will be provided on this page when they happen.
